Kitchen Design: No cabinets

As most of you may know, we've been in the process of remodeling our home for about a year now.  It has been a long, s..l..o..w process - as in, we half finished a few projects here and there.

One of the biggest things that I had hoped would have been finished since last year was our kitchen.  But let's face it - I'm more of a planner than a do-er.  We had taken out the kitchen sink and most of the old, cracking tile that was still lingering on our concrete countertops and we had planned to re-tile the whole shebang and reface the cabinetry.  Well after getting down to the nitty gritty, I realized that the cabinets were in pretty bad shape and refacing them instead of replacing them would just prolong their demise.

But, in the real world, replacing all the cabinets in our kitchen will be COSTLY.  The price of cabinets is much higher than you would think and since we're not so handy, building all of it on our own would probably cost us a finger or two.

So, I decided to look for alternatives.  In other words, I googled "kitchen no cabinets" and remarkably found some new kitchen inspiration that would save me a couple grand!

Our kitchen layout is sorta like this picture above, except our sink is near the windows and the stove is placed in front of the plain wall.

I think eliminating the wall cabinets and replacing them with minimal shelving would be a great idea especially since those cabinets are usually empty anyway.

What do you think?  Are you more traditional and prefer wall cabinets?  Or would you dare to go bare?

P.S.  I know I slacked on yesterday's outfit post.  I was just SWAMPED with work yesterday (and still am today).  Don't worry, I haven't forgotten your requests, I'll get them up soon, I promise!

  1. Ok, let's be honest, when I read the title I was like "girl, no cabinets? Are you high? Let's just use paper plates for the rest of our lives". Then I saw the pictures and realized there were still shelves. Ooooh.
I actually love that look! Especially if you have really pretty dishes! Besides, cheap is my favorite <3

    1. Lol. Cheap is definitely my favorite too! And yeah, still shelving so there's not just a huge bare wall of emptiness. Lol. I think I should follow your lead and start collecting some mismatched tea cups and dishes for an interesting display!

  2. I agree with Heather- at first I was like, "No cabinets? WHAT!?"

But after seeing the pictures- I LOVE!

If I had open shelving like that I would like my dishes to match- but then again you could get a really cool eclectic look going with mismatched dishes, if you're into that sort of thing.

Have you checked out apartmenttherapy.com? I know you live in a house, but sometimes they post some really great DIY ideas.

Can't wait to see what you guys come up with!

  4. I like the way these kitchens look in these pictures and you can definitely pull it off! Personally, I need my cabinets. I am just way too OCD to let everything be out in the open. Plus, all my cabinets are full... maybe I just have too much stuff. :)

  6. i really like the look of the 2nd pic there. i never thought of kitchens without cabinets - i dont think i could do that for my own house though - we have too much crap! - but done right, they can look nice!

if youre thinking of reselling down the line, it might be better to invest in the cabinets though for the resale value ... just a thought! thats always guided my husband and i through our renovations. cant wait to see what you come up with! =)

    1. Thanks for the advice! We really have a LOT of storage space in our kitchen but barely any dishes. I'm thinking about posting some pictures this week of our main kitchen and extra kitchen area to show everyone what it looks like. The house was built in the 60's and not a lot has been updated since then so the house really needs a facelift!

  8. when we re=did our kitchen, we just painted the cabinets. we did all black appliances (our house didnt come with any), white cabinets, and grey walls. we also had some exposed brick, and it all looked great and allowed us to use whatever color combo with accessories.

good luck! it is a slow process and super time consuming too.

    1. Oooh I just love that color scheme! You can never go wrong with classic colors like those, plus the exposed brick gives it that element of warmth and character. It sounds gorgeous.

Right now, everything in our kitchen is a mess. Our stove is black, fridge is off-white, cabinets are tan, floor tiles are...well from the 70's so they've got that orange geometric flower pattern going on - trust me, its bad.

I'll probably be posting some pictures of the kitchen this week so you can see what I mean. Lol. And yes, I agree - it is a slow and time consuming process but hopefully it all turns out great in the end.

    1. Thanks for commenting! I do love the look of wall cabinets, but because I'm so short, it can be a hassle to use which is why our wall cabinets are usually empty. Lol.

  12. Love the idea to go with shelves, my cupboards are a freakin mess inside! (ie open door, throw pot/pan/container inside, shut door quickly so *insert item* doesn't fall out)

Will be so easy having kids too as you can see everything you've got and just grab what you need quickly at meal times - looking forward to seeing the finished solution!

  13. Mulling over some renovating projects for your kitchen area is not as problematical as you may have believed. It can be a trouble-free procedure of just providing your kitchen area a new cover of colour for example, or else you could modify those older and decayed units. construction companies san francisco

  14. Hello, my name is Jessie from Taiwan. My company is thinking to sell Taiwan kitchens to Guam, for projects. May I ask for your opinion for our research? Thank you very much!

    1. What is the common-used appliances (hob, hood, oven) in Guam?

    2. If you want to buy kitchens appliances, who or where will you recommend?

Thank you for your kind reply.
