Replying to comments and visiting your readers' blogs definitely counts as well, so I'm pretty sure I've got this one down already. I try to make it a point to respond to each and every comment on my blog and I follow each and every one of my followers back (all 17 of you lovely gals! - as of 3/16/2012). I have come to realize however, that not all readers come back to see that I've responded to their comments on my blog, so I go a little further and comment on their blogs as well. A double whammy! Lol.
Day 6 of the book provides you with "27 Must-Read Tips and Tutorials for Bloggers. I won't list them all here, you'll have to read the book for that. Lol.
So I thought it'd be fun to do a post about stereotypes. I have been labeled as so many different things by so many different people at so many different times of my life. (Was that too many "so many"'s?) Here are some frequently asked questions/stereotypes that people have about me:
You're Korean so you must love kimchi. Definitely NOT true. In fact, I hated kimchi my whole life! It wasn't until just recently that I started eating little bits of cabbage kimchi.
Don't people on Guam live in grass huts? Umm...not for the last few centuries. Guam is NOT a foreign third-world country people! It is a U.S. territory which means we do have military bases, shopping centers, hotels, and concrete houses.
You're a mother so you don't care how you look. FALSE. I have always - ALWAYS - been one to keep up with my appearances and attitude. I may not be dripping in designer, but I do pride myself on being a frugal fashionista and I try to keep a positive outlook in most situations. Of course I do let myself go on sick days or cleaning days though.
People from Hawaii have bad English. Okay, I can't speak for the rest of the state, but I think I do pretty well for myself. For those of you who don't know, a lot (not all) of people in Hawaii speak 'pidgin' or broken English. It's kind of like a mix of different languages but to some people it can sound like jibberish. I can speak it, but I can also turn it off. Brah.
You model so you must be full of yourself. Uh, no. I consider myself to be confident (okay sometimes a little cocky) but I do have a lot of insecurities about myself as well. And until I wake up one morning and suddenly look like Adriana Lima, there is no chance that I'll be too sexy for any shirt any time soon.
You're Asian so you must be super smart. Nope. Though I try to make myself seem super smart (especially when debating with Joey), I've never really excelled in academics. I dropped out of college twice actually because it bored me. My least favorite subject is math.
You blog, so you probably make up stories to sound cool. I wish! I mean, if I really wanted to make myself sound cool, don't you think I would have tried a little harder and had a lot more followers? Duh.
You used to be a stripper. FALSE! There is a huge difference and a lot of misconceptions between gogo dancing and stripping. Sure gogo dancers dance on a stage in bathing suits and undies (c'mon, sex sells), but they do not take off their clothes and show you their choo-chas (okay, maybe some unprofessional ones might). Most of us just love to go out and dance - and if people are willing to give you money to hang out with friends and dance all night, would you really turn that down?
Well those are just a FEW comments and questions that people have said about me throughout my life - so far. Hope you learned a few things from it!
Now what about you? What are some untrue stereotypes that people assume about you?
"they do not take off their clothes and show you their choo-chas" lol oh gosh...
ReplyDeleteI actually really enjoy this post, especially the bit saying you DON'T make up stories because I feel like a lot of bloggers do that, and it always irritates me. I think some misconceptions about me are that
1) I don't talk because I hate everybody - no, I'm just shy in certain situations, I'm sorry if my face tends to look angry!
2) I'm a very angry person - I have a few select people at school that think I'm just angry all day long, but I'm not at all. When I'm with Garrett or people I ENJOY being around, I have fun, I laugh, I giggle, all that jazz, but if I don't like you, I'm probably not happy when I get stuck working with you on a project and I'm not just going to hide it to save your feelings. If I don't want to be around you, you'd know it
xo Heather
Omg, people think I'm angry all the time too! It's really just my face though. Which is another stereotypical question I get "You're Korean so you must be angry all the time". Lol. Because my face looks a little mad or bored, people think I'm mean and unapproachable sometimes. But then again, smiling and being super happy all the time can invite unwanted and fake friends around. Like your psycho acquaintance friend that stayed for 3 hours! Lol.
DeleteI like to think I suffer from chronic bitch face ;) haha! And don't even get me started on that girl! Someday when I remember, i'll sit down and write you an angry letter and tell you all about her, she's CRAZY!
Deletexo Heather
ugh, I hear you on this. I'm a student so I get a lot of the old 'oh you must be lazy and drink all the time gumpf' - non. I don't drink hardly ever because I don't really enjoy it, and I work SO HARD 'cos I have a child and I need a good career. I also hate the whole 'mum' stereotype. I went to see a hearing therapist recently, because I have an ear problem and she spent the whole time saying things like 'so when you come home and you've got all that washing to do and your son and husband (he's not my husband!) are watching the football...' and I'm like, why would my boyfriend leave the washing for me to do if he's been home and I've been working all day? I wouldn't come home and do it, i'd come home and be cross because he hadn't done it! And he hates football. And I hate stereotypes. Yuck. x
ReplyDeleteLol! It's so funny because I was totally lazy and drank ALL the time in my first year of college. But since I had kids, I've realized the importance of a good education so I'm trying to work hard at my job and in my school work. I think I'm even more motivated now that I'm the one paying for my school, not my parents.
DeleteAnd I would be absolutely pissed off if my bf stayed home all day and I had to come home from work and do all the housework as well! Thankfully on the days my bf is off, he does laundry or yard work and cleans up around the house. Maybe your hearing therapist is just venting because her husband does that to her. Lol.
wow that's really funny 'cause when my bf has a day off he plays PS3 all day...and then i have to come home from work and clean up after him. you guys are lucky your significant others do their share of the work!!
Deletei hate the asian stereotype of being smart/good at math-i hate math too!!
I love how real you are! Thanks for sharing this with us, I know how it is to be stereotyped. Growing up i na small town, before moving to Philly this year people thought I was so weird and full of my self as well as shallow because of blogging and my love for fashion.
ReplyDeleteAnd now that I'm a student people think I party all the time when I actually dont like partying at all so i never go! haha.
You can never please everyone I guess.
<3Chelsea Elizabeth
Thanks for commenting! When I was little and I first moved to Hawaii, people thought I was weird. Even in elementary I was always ahead of the trend. I would recreate outfits I saw on a fashion show on tv and everyone thought I was weird because normal kids would wear a t-shirt and jeans. Some people just don't get it...
DeleteEvery single one of those stereotypes...GRRRRR
ReplyDeleteAnd yes we do have running water and bathrooms and NO we do NOT wear grass skirts everyday!
Lol. Right! Some people think all we do in Hawaii is surf and drink out of coconuts - which would be nice if we didn't have actual jobs and mouths to feed.
DeleteCute blog girl ! Just followed you !
ReplyDeleteAnd, just some info in case you didn't know. A lot of people respond to comments by email, so be sure to link your email to your profile. Another blogger told me this awhile back and it made things so much easier!
Can't wait to read more from you!
Not only we have a lot of similarities but the things that you say is what I would write...can I just cut and paste? lol. Im sure that blogging 101 no no. I can relate to everything that you write...its crazy. Just remember who was following you first before you got hella big and famous girl...and remember the little people...:). lol. I am so behind on P90x, I cant wait to get better and do the last 30 days of it so we can start the 30 day challenges together:). keep up the great blogging! xx.
ReplyDeleteLol you're so funny! And you can totally copy and paste, just be sure to mention me! And hey, I'm still a beginning blogger so we're in this together girl! I hope you get back to 100% soon! I miss seeing your lovely face in my blogroll!
DeleteThe kimchi stereotype! haha. Sorry, I also thought before that all Koreans like to eat it! My Korean students all said that they just can't eat a meal without kimchi, it's as important as rice. Now I know my mistake! Filipinos are also labeled to have bad english and a funny accent (some are not really that good, you can't blame us, we have to learn at least 3 languages in a lifetime) but there are just lots who can speak english really well. SO yeah, no stereotyping please! :D

funandruins.blogspot.com
Lol. I think maybe native Koreans eat kimchi more than American/Koreans do but I have never really liked it. My aunt would make it and I hated going to her house because it always smelled like sour radish. Yuck! And what languages do you have to learn? I'd love to be able to speak 3 different languages! (I took Spanish and Japanese classes before - but I barely remember any of it.)
DeletePhilippines as a country has a lot of languages.. I think more than a hundred...Since we are living in several islands, each island kind of speaks a totally different language. So if you are a filipino, you speak your local language(in your island), the national philippine language (tagalog, it's a mixture of spanish/mayan/english) and of course, you need to speak english because that's the language used in schools, media, business, etc.. I don't know if this makes sense..lol...
DeleteWow, I didn't know that! I have a lot of friends back home who are Filipino and I know they speak Tagalog, but I didn't know that each island had its own language too! That's really cool. My friends only taught me some Filipino words - and they're all bad words. Lol.
DeleteHaha. Wow! It's nice to hear you have lots of Filipino friends. :DD If you are living in our capital city, Manila, you may only know Tagalog but the rest of the provinces have their own language. :)
DeleteThis is really interesting Duckie!! Not that I necessarily believed all these stereotypes but it's taught me more about you!
ReplyDeleteThanks, I think there are misconceptions about everyone and it's fun to set the record straight on a few things about yourself.
Deletelol this post brightened my night! I don't fancy math either you're not alone :P And don't worry, you JUST STARTED OUT! You don't have to make anything up to gain followers: if you love what you do, you'll excel, and it seems as though you're on the right path :)
ReplyDeletehave a great week!
Best from,
Classic+Glam
I know I was pretty decent in math until the alphabet started getting involved. Lol. I think the highest level of math I took was Algebra II or something. My brothers are the math whizzes, I'm better at creative writing. Lol.
DeleteI'm asian so get similar comment/stereotypes. Except in Australia it's even worst and they don't know the difference between Koreans and Chinese! I like your space here, it's good to find another mother who is into fashion/beauty too!
